What's In A Name?

Have you ever named something…or, better yet, someone? I have named a few things in my life. As a child, I named pets.  I named (or, rather, had veto powers over) our two daughters, Isabella and Peyton. I have also named a church—which is weird!  You kind of expect churches to “come with” names (like 1st, 2nd or 3rd  whatever…yes, I have seen a Third Baptist in a town).

Sometimes there are guidelines when naming someone.  For example, it can’t be the name of anyone you have ever dated, you don’t want it to the be name of someone who bullied you, or someone that was ugly, and it obviously has to pass the “banana, fanna, fo, fanna” test…

So what went through the mind of God when he named Jesus? We see in Isaiah 9:6 “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”

There are many names for Jesus, but what do they really mean? Join us over the next three weeks as we look at some of these names to see what they really mean. You'll gain a new and relevant perspective on the Savior who was born in a stable over two thousand years ago.
